Conference weeks have their own rhythm. Early mornings, long days, constant conversations, and just enough disruption to throw off anything that resembles a normal routine.
Over time, I’ve realized that how I pack for those weeks makes a bigger difference than anything I try to “fix” once I’m there.
So I started thinking less about what I need for the conference, and more about what I need to feel like a functional human while I’m in it.
Here’s what’s always in my bag now:
1. A reusable water bottle, because it’s easy to forget to drink water when you’re moving all day.
2. Simple snacks with some substance so I’m not relying on whatever is available between sessions. Let me know if you’d like some suggestions.
3. Something for a quick reset, whether that’s headphones, music, or just a few minutes of quiet. Personally, headphones have become my favorite tool! I use them to navigate anxiety while flying, disconnect from the conference world in my own neurodivergent safe space when needed, and filter my music to meet or lift my mood. And sometimes, a motivational podcast puts me in the mindset for networking each day.
4. Comfortable shoes that still look fashionable, because no one talks about how much walking and standing actually happen. And if fashion isn’t your thing – do you, boo!
5. Something that makes the hotel feel a little less like a hotel at the end of the day – my pillow, slippers, scent – something that makes the room feel more like home for better sleep. And ALWAYS bring cilps for curtains just in case the promoted black out curtains aren’t actually blacking things out. Pro tip – you can also use the clips on a hotel hanger. You’re welcome.
6. White noise app on phone to drown out hallway noise and inconsistent AC systems.
7. Layers! Conferences are typically freezing and I’m a Florida girl. I always bring at least one pair of slacks just in case the thought of my legs exposed gives me chills. I’ve even re-embraced stockings. And I usually have a light sweater, blazer, or denim jacket that matches all outfits in case sleeveless dresses are a no-go.
8. Vitamins… which I normally hate. But I’ve been bringing these chewy ones lately that feel more like a small treat than something I have to force myself to take (Grüns are my personal fave), which makes it a lot easier to stay consistent during the week.
9. My iPad – not for work but for drawing or writing comedy. It’s my creative disconnect at the end of a day or a helpful distraction on the plane. If you like to draw/paint, ProCreate is my fave app.
10. An empty purse pocket or a little coin-purse for business cards! Otherwise, my ADHD brain will put these in places I can’t remember and then the follow-up post conference becomes an added layer of stress.
Nothing about conference weeks is perfect, so I’ve stopped trying to make it that way.
I just pack in a way that supports the reality of it.
Curious what others always bring that makes a difference once the week gets going.
